Air New Zealand Airpoints Terms and Conditions

You'll find definitions of specific Airpoints Programme terms we use at the end of these Terms and Conditions.

1 Earning Airpoints Dollars

1.1 General
1.1.1 To help us to record your Air New Zealand Airpoints Dollars automatically, you must quote your Membership number when making any bookings and when you check-in with any Non-Airline Partner. Air New Zealand and Air New Zealand Link are not responsible for any Airpoints Dollars that don't appear in your Account or if a Partner fails to credit Airpoints Dollars to your Account.
1.1.2 Air New Zealand and Air New Zealand Link will only enter into discussions or correspondence with you, about crediting your Airpoints Dollars if you supply proof (the original boarding pass and the original or a copy of your Flight Ticket) of your Qualifying Flight or the original receipt for any Non-Airline Partner qualifying goods or services you have bought.
Your claim for missing Airpoints Dollars must be made within six months of:
• the relevant Qualifying Flight; or
• the date you used the Non-Airline qualifying goods and/or services; or
• the relevant promotion end date (however, if the promotion includes a Qualifying Flight, you must make your claim within six months of the Flight, not the promotion end date).
We're not responsible for any claims for Airpoints Dollars that have been delayed, or lost, or for any claims that the Air New Zealand Contact Centre doesn't receive.
1.1.3 You can't earn Airpoints Dollars for Non-Qualifying Flights.
1.1.4 Your Account can be credited with Airpoints Dollars for a Qualifying Flight taken before your Date of Joining - but only if:
• you took the Qualifying Flight less than 30 days before your Date of Joining; or
• the last Sector of your Journey was completed less than 30 days before your Date of Joining, and the entire Journey which is on the same Ticket or Itinerary was taken within the six month period before your Date of Joining.
To have your Account credited with these Airpoints Dollars, you must send your original boarding pass and the original or a copy of your Ticket to the Air New Zealand Contact Centre within the time, specified above.
1.1.5 It may take up to eight weeks for Airpoints Dollars to be credited to your Account, once we have all the information we need. You can't redeem these Airpoints Dollars for Rewards until they have been credited to your Account.
1.1.6 Airpoints Dollars earned on Itineraries involving only Air New Zealand Operated Qualifying Flights are calculated in accordance with the Airpoints Dollars Earned on Air New Zealand Chart. Airpoints Dollars earned on Qualifying Flights that are a combination of Partner Airlines or Air New Zealand and Partner Airlines are calculated in accordance with the Partner Airline Earn Chart.
1.1.6.1 If your Airpoints Dollars for your Qualifying Flight have been credited to your Account using the Airpoints Dollars Earned on Air New Zealand Chart, and within 30 days you take a Partner Airline Flight(s) that we consider is part of the same Journey, the Airpoints Dollars already credited will be deducted from your Account and we will credit Airpoints Dollars to your Account using the Partner Airline Earn Chart.
1.1.7 Subject to these Terms and Conditions, you can earn Airpoints Dollars for every additional seat on a Qualifying Flight that you buy - but only if you're the only person who will use that seat and the Ticket is issued in your name.
1.1.8 The payment method noted on a Reward Travel Ticket will identify the Ticket as ineligible to earn Airpoints Dollars.
1.1.9 You can't earn Airpoints Dollars on travel that qualifies you (at the same time) for benefits under any other loyalty programme or any other airline's frequent flyer programme. You also can't transfer Airpoints Dollars earned for travel on one Partner Airline to another Partner Airline's frequent flyer programme. When you book, you must specify the programme to which you want your frequent flyer points credited - you must not apply to earn both Airpoints Dollars and credits in any other loyalty programme including any other airline's frequent flyer programme for the same air travel.
1.2 Earning Airpoints Dollars on Air New Zealand Flights
1.2.1 We'll calculate the Airpoints Dollars you earn on Air New Zealand Operated Flights for international Sectors using the Origin to Destination One-Way Journey and the class of travel. On a One-Way Journey, we'll calculate your Airpoints Dollars and credit them to your Account after the last Flight. On return Origin to Destination Journeys, we'll credit Airpoints Dollars to your Account at the Turn-around Point and when the final destination is reached.
1.2.2 We'll calculate Airpoints Dollars you earn on Air New Zealand domestic Sectors, flown within 24 hours of an international Sector, using the "Domestic Add-on" category of the Airpoints Dollars Earned on Air New Zealand Chart. These Airpoints Dollars will be applied once in either direction, no matter how many domestic Sectors you fly within the applicable 24-hour period. We'll calculate the 24-hour period from the scheduled time of arrival to the scheduled time of departure.
1.2.3 Airpoints Dollars you earn on Air New Zealand domestic Sectors flown more than 24 hours before or after an international Sector, are calculated based on the "Within New Zealand" category of the Partner Airline earn Chart if your Journey includes airline partners.
Airpoints Dollars you earn on Air New Zealand domestic Sectors which are not within 24 hours of an international Sector, are calculated based on one of the two "Domestic Locations Within New Zealand" category of the Airpoints Dollars Earned on Air New Zealand Chart, depending on the kilometres flown.
1.2.4 If your Journey is in more than one Service Class, we'll calculate Airpoints Dollars for the entire Journey based on the Service Class in which you travelled the greatest distance.
1.2.5 You can't earn Airpoints Dollars for travel on Air New Zealand Domestic, Tasman and Pacific Island Smart Saver fares booked in classes L,G,S,K,P, and any Grabaseat fares. However, travel in these classes can be recorded in your account for the purposes outlined in clause 6.6.2. You can't earn Airpoints Dollars for travel booked in classes I,X,N,R on any Air New Zealand flight.
1.3 Earning Airpoints Dollars on Partner Airline Flights
1.3.1 You can earn Airpoints Dollars on Partner Airlines' Flights and/or Air New Zealand Operated Flights based on the eligible booking class and the Sector(s) in which you travel. Airpoints Dollars earned for travel within a geographic Zone are based on the booking class and the kilometres flown.
1.3.2 Route restrictions and residency conditions may apply to earning Airpoints Dollars on Partner Airlines - and some Partner Airlines' booking classes may have different earning rates for Airpoints Dollars. This depends on each Partner Airline's terms and conditions. Booking class eligibility and Airpoints Dollars' earning rates can be changed without notice. 1.4.5.3 If requested by both persons in the case of either separation or divorce, 50% of the Airpoints Dollars accrued from such joint accounts or credit cards, and which have not yet been redeemed, may be transferred from one joint account holder's Member's Account to the other joint account holder's Member's Account - as long as both Members ask for the transaction. The Membership details and PAC numbers for both Members must be sent to the Air New Zealand Contact Centre with supporting documentation from the solicitor of the Member from who's Account the Airpoints Dollars will be transferred. Once the Air New Zealand Contact Centre has received and verified the documentation, the relevant Airpoints Dollars which have not already been redeemed for Rewards will be equally divided and distributed into the relevant Members' Accounts.
1.4.5.4 If one person dies, 100% of the Airpoints Dollars accrued from such joint accounts or credit cards, and that have not yet been redeemed, may be transferred from that Member's Account to the other joint account holder's Member's Account. The transferee's Membership details and PAC number, with a certified true copy of the transferring Member's death certificate, must be sent to the Air New Zealand Contact Centre.

2 Airpoints Dollars Validity and Expiry

2.1 Airpoints Dollars you earn are available for redemption until the end of the fourth year after the Membership year in which they were earned (see clause 2.2).
2.2 On your Anniversary Date, all Airpoints Dollars earned more than four years before then will expire and be removed from your Account. Whenever you claim a Reward, Airpoints Dollars will be redeemed in the order they were credited to your Account.
2.3 You can combine valid Airpoints Dollars earned in one Membership year with valid Airpoints Dollars earned in other Membership years to claim Rewards.
2.4 Airpoints Dollars that you redeem but that are then re-credited to your Account (eg. owing to a cancellation or unavailability of an Upgrade) will be re-credited with the original date of when they were earned. Any Airpoints Dollars used in the booking that have as at the date of re-crediting expired, will not be re-credited to your Account.
2.5 Reward travel can be changed (subject to availability, applicable fare rules and clauses 2.5.1 and 2.5.2) as follows:
2.5.1 For Reward Travel involving travel solely on Air New Zealand services, you can make changes to your booking using the Airpoints Dollars that were used in the original booking, even if those Airpoints Dollars have since the date of the original booking expired. These changes may occur providing: (i) where travel has not yet commenced, changes are made within 12 months of the date in which the booking was originally ticketed; or (ii) where travel has commenced, changes are made within 12 months of the date at which the first Sector of the Itinerary was travelled. Any changes outside of the periods mentioned in (i) and (ii) will require a new booking to be made using un-expired Airpoints Dollars.
2.5.2 For Reward Travel involving travel using the Partner and Mixed Carrier Chart, you can make changes to your booking using the Airpoints Dollars that were used in the original booking, even if those Airpoints Dollars have since the date of the original booking expired, providing such changes are made within 12 months from the date on which the booking was originally ticketed. Any changes outside of this period will require a new booking to be made using un-expired Airpoints Dollars. Changes to Reward Travel involving travel using the Partner and Mixed Carrier Chart are not permitted once travel has commenced.
2.5.3 Validity for all non-air redemptions is 12 months from the initial booking date. Where Airpoints Dollars that would have otherwise expired have been used to purchase a non-air redemption, any change to the redemption date beyond this validity period will require a new booking to be made using un-expired Airpoints Dollars.
2.6 Where the value due to expire is greater than 10 Airpoints Dollars you will be notified at least one month prior to expiry. You will not be notified if less than 10 Airpoints Dollars are due to expire.

If Flights are delayed for any reason and passengers receive at least 24 hours' notice, we reserve the right to postpone Reward Travel dates and we may at our sole discretion make alternative Reward Travel arrangements.
Where we can't give 24 hours' notice, we have the sole right to make alternative arrangements - we will not honour any alternative arrangements you may make directly with other carriers.
3.1.21 Travel using Award Tickets issued by or on behalf of the Air New Zealand Contact Centre is subject to Air New Zealand's and Air New Zealand Link's conditions, applicable laws and any other conditions we may advise Members about from time to time. For Australian Members, any Service Fees to be paid using Australian Airpoints Dollars that are quoted in a currency other than Australian Dollars will be converted by us at our discretion into Australian Dollars or the Australian Airpoints Dollars equivalent for deduction from your Account. If you change your country of residence to or from Australia more than twice in a 12 month period you will incur a service fee of $25 or 25 Airpoints Dollars.
6.2.2 Service Fees can only be paid with Airpoints Dollars if you have enough Airpoints Dollars to pay them without leaving your Account with a negative balance.
6.3 All Service Fees refunded will be refunded in the same currency in which they were paid.
6.4 If a Service Fee and a redemption of Airpoints Dollars for a Reward are to be deducted from an Account at the same time, the Airpoints Dollars for the Reward will be deducted first. If there are not enough Airpoints Dollars left to pay the Service Fee, you must pay the Service Fee in Cash.

If there are enough Airpoints Dollars to pay for the Reward but not enough to pay for both the Reward and the Addition of Giftee fee, you'll have to pay the Addition of Giftee fee in Cash.

However, if you have an Online relationship but do not choose to pay your annual Account fee online or by automatic deduction in accordance with clause 6.6.5.1, you'll be charged the annual Account fee at the Offline rate of NZ$30.00, AU$30.00 (for Australian Members) or 30 Airpoints Dollars. UK Residents are not subject to these Annual Account Fees as of 27 Feb 08.
6.6.1.2 If you have an Offline relationship, you'll be charged the annual Account fee at the Offline rate of NZ$30.00, AU$30.00 (for Australian Members) or 30 Airpoints Dollars. UK Residents are not subject to these Annual Account Fees as of 27 Feb 08.

Although you can't earn Airpoints Dollars on Air New Zealand Domestic, Tasman and Pacific Island Smart Saver fares booked in classes L, G, S, K, P and A, they will be recognised for the purposes of this clause for exemption from the annual Account fee. To qualify, you must enter your Membership number when booking a Qualifying Flight or a Smart Saver Fare. 6.6.6 If you have an Online relationship, we'll write to you within the 30 day period before your annual Account fee is due, to let you know the due date for payment. If you have an Offline relationship, we'll write to you 30 days before the annual Account fee is due with the same information.
6.6.6.1 If you don't pay your annual Account fee by the due date, you authorise us to automatically deduct the applicable fee in Airpoints Dollars from your Account. If there are not enough Airpoints Dollars in your Account when the fee is due, the fee will still be deducted and your Account will be deemed Dormant (see clause 7.7.2).
6.6.7 If our email to you about the due date for your annual Account fee is returned to us as undeliverable, we'll send the information by post. If that is returned to us as undeliverable, your account will be deemed Temporarily Closed and clause 7.4 will apply.
